OUR GARMENT BAGS

It’s more important than ever for us all to reduce the amount of single-use plastic that we use. That’s why we recently switched our despatch bags from plastic to paper and have been committed to incorporating waste plastics into our designs for many years, along with our other environmental projects which you can find out about here. However, if you’ve ordered from online, you’ll notice your items are in plastic bags.

We believe in being as transparent with our customers as possible, which is why we’ve answered your questions regarding these bags. We’re always looking for ways to improve and hope to find a viable, non-plastic alternative in the future.

WHAT ARE YOUR BAGS MADE FROM?

The bags are made from a recycled Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE), which is great for shopping bags and garment bags. It’s a very flexible material, strong enough not to break when we send stock from our factories to our warehouse and then on to you at home.

ARE YOUR BAGS MADE FROM RECYCLED PLASTIC?

Most of our bags come from 100% recycled plastic. The simple reason not all of them are 100% recycled is that we buy our bags locally in the country our products are made, which means some are unable to have fully recycled content. We could buy all our bags from China, but we would prefer to support the economies where we manufacture and reduce our carbon footprint by not shipping packaging across the world when we can avoid doing so. Only a small proportion of our bags do not contain 100% recycled plastic, but all the bags can be recycled after use.

HOW DO I RECYCLE MY BAG?

Every local authority is different in what they can process through their facilities. It would be wonderful if there was a universal standard, but until that day, as with all items you put in your recycling bin, you will need to check it’s suitable.

Look for the below symbol in the list of the types of plastic that your council will accept for recycling. If they do – great news – you can recycle our bags in your local area. If not, why not write to your local councillor and demand that plastic bags are included in the list of recyclable materials?

ARE YOUR BAGS COMPOSTABLE?

Not at the moment. Because they’re still made of plastic, they must not be buried in your garden or allotment, nor used for food waste (unless your council asks for plastic food waste bags).

WHY DO YOU NEED TO USE PLASTIC BAGS?

We still believe a “plastic” type of bag is the most effective at minimising waste through spoiled goods either in transit to us, in storage at the warehouse or in transit to our stores or to your home, and is the most effective material for keeping the clothes hygienic and clean. Where we can remove it and use alternatives, we do.

IS IT AS GOOD AS CONVENTIONAL PLASTIC?

Absolutely, the bags are manufactured by companies that are experts in their product. The bags perform just as well as original virgin plastic.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO REDUCE WASTE FURTHER?

We have been trialling a bag made from seaweed which is 100% organic and can be composted at home. We have tested other new solutions but unfortunately the bags can degrade too soon in our warehouse which is not ideal. Early signs show the seaweed solution is suitable, and if commercially successful, we will be rolling this out and removing even more plastic.

We ensure all plastic bags in the warehouse and the stores are reused where appropriate and if that is not possible, they are recycled with specialist companies in bulk.

We are always looking at how we can improve, but we are mindful to investigate the wider impact of new technologies and solutions. We believe that small, sensible steps in the right direction will ultimately achieve a more sustainable outcome.
