This Earth Day, we've collaborated with a fellow B Corp brand to bring you the most eco-friendly cleaning tips to guide you towards change and ultimately saving our precious planet. Ecover is clean in every sense of the word! They create clean cleaning products "for the sake of ourselves, our homes, our communities and our world." See what their Brand Manager Charlotte had to say about cleaning and the environment.
The Earth Day Network works year round to solve climate change, to end plastic pollution, to protect endangered species, and to broaden, educate, and activate the environmental movement across the globe. This year, their campaign focuses on protecting our species. Cleaning products can be full of chemicals that are toxic to aquatic life; read more on today's blog to find out why and what you can use instead.
1. Wash clothes at 30 degrees
Of course, the golden rule is to always check the care labels before loading up the machine. But, high temperatures usually aren't necessary and can waste a lot of energy. Choosing to wash at 30 degrees instead of a higher setting saves around 40% of energy and will still leave your clothes looking and smelling fresh!
2. Use plant-based products
Even better, use plant-based products that favour biodegradable ingredients to reduce the impact of your waste water on aquatic life. If you've ever taken the time to read the label on your washing up liquid or cleaning spray, you might have even seen the warning "harmful to aquatic life with long-lasting effects". All Ecover's products use plant-based ingredients without harmful phosphates and other strong chemicals.
3. Shorter cycles for less dirty clothes
Just as colder cycles save energy, washing laundry that's not stained or completely soiled in dirt on a shorter cycle saves energy and will clean them just as well! I recently noticed that I'd been using the same cycle for my everyday clothes as I was for heavier towels and bedding which was so unnecessary. I changed to a quicker cycle for tops, tees and jeans and saw absolutely no change in the quality of wash, but certainly saved on energy!
4. Avoid chlorine bleach
Although chlorine has plenty of benefits when it comes to cleaning and disinfecting, once it gets out into the environment and reaches water, it reacts with other elements to form toxins that are dangerous to wildlife. If you're looking for an alternative to help keep your whites white, Ecover offers a brilliant chlorine-free laundry bleach.
5. Don't do half loads
We've talked plenty about changing your laundry habits to save energy - here's another one to add to the list! It really doesn't need much explaining. Not filling the drum yet using the same amount of water and energy needed for a full load just screams waste and environmental impact.
6. Use concentrated detergent
Water is one of our most valuable resources, yet each day we waste so much of it! Ecover's main laundry liquids are concentrated formulas, meaning they've used less water to be produced and they'll last you even longer, slowing down the production rate which leads to huge energy and water savings!
7. Wash clothes inside-out
This will help keep them looking new, meaning you'll have to replace them less often and will consequently contribute to slowing down the fast-fashion industry that is using up so much energy day in, day out.
