As you might (or might not!) know, 5% of our gift voucher sales go towards funding our charities and environmental projects, making them a wonderful gift all round. But have you ever wondered how exactly the money is spent? Well, as part of B Corp Month’s Community Week, we wanted to bring your attention to the good causes we support through the 5% of gift voucher sales, which include some exciting new projects.
Wanting to support a charity where the funds really make a difference, JoJo has been working with Nema since 2006, a small charity based in rural Northern Mozambique to reduce infant mortality rates through health, education and enterprise projects. Sadly, the area was hit by a radical Islamist insurgence in 2017 which continues to escalate, and we have had to put our projects on hold until it is safe to resume. However, despite the violence and suffering, JoJo is still funding scholarships for 80 children, allowing them to stay in education, and we continue to pay the salaries of the Nema team.
Tree planting in South Wales
We have also spent a portion of the 5% of gift voucher sales on donations to Stump up for Trees, who are embarking on a massive project to plant 1 million trees in the Brecon Beacons in a bid to balance carbon emissions. They have also been teaching us how to plant our very own JoJo Forever Forest – also in South Wales – where we’ve been able to fund the planting of 6,000 trees.
Just One Tree
We really do love our trees at JoJo – it really is difficult to overstate their benefits – which is why we also support JUST ONE Tree, a non-profit initiative that aims to remove CO2 from the atmosphere through global reforestation. We’ve funded the planting of another 6,000 trees via JUST ONE Tree in sub-Saharan Africa to help combat deforestation and are supporting the replanting of mangroves which have a major effect in reducing climate change.
Although we’ve been forced to put things on hold due to the pandemic, we also normally use the funds to pay for costs related to our From a Mother to Another initiative. Each year in the run-up to Mother’s Day, we ask our customers to sort their outgrown children’s clothes into lovely outfits ready to be donated to young families in need. Over the last five years, we have prevented around five tonnes of clothing from going to waste by facilitating the delivery of generously donated parcels to children living in poverty in the UK and Ireland.
