Sleepy Days Header DT 4x1

How Children Can Get a Good Night’s Sleep

Sleep. Love it or loathe it, we all need sleep. Adults should aim for at least 7 to 9 hours of uninterrupted sleep a night — yes, we can dream. But for smaller snoozers out there, they’ll need around 10 hours of shut-eye. Establishing a good bedtime routine from an early age contributes to a well-rested child. And if they get a good night’s rest, they’ll stay alert and have more energy during the day. That’s more time for playing, learning, eating, and growing!

As children grow, their sleep patterns will naturally adjust, thanks to developing body clocks. But whether your little one is sleeping in their own room for the first time, or they’re getting ready for bed on a school night, there’s lots of ways to wind down and relax that will work for small children (and big kids, too). Follow our 5 helpful steps to getting a good night’s sleep. You won’t even hear a peep from anyone counting sheep.

Enjoy a warm bath

A good night’s sleep starts with a warm bath. It’s a great way to wash away the day, from dinner crumbs and being outside with Mum, to all the muddy, messy play. When running the bath, make sure the water temperature stays below 37° to ensure your child’s delicate skin remains super soft without burning. If your child’s a bit bigger, let tiny tootsies feel the bath water for the first time before they sit down. Too hot or too cold? Run some more water to get the temperature just right.

Bathtime shouldn’t be boring. Faces will light up with squeaky bath squirters in a bath routine. As your child plays with their new bathtime friends, it’s even easier for you to scrub-a-dub-dub their hair. All baths must come to an end, but with a snuggly towelling robe ready and waiting, you won’t be oh-so-cold. Pull the plug out, put a dressing gown on, and get dry in style.

Wear snuggly PJs

Pyjamas don’t find the person. The person finds the pyjamas. So whether you’re after outfits for the cold nights, t-shirt and short PJs for the warmer evenings, or mix-and-match options to change your bedtime look, we have something for you. Wearing the right pair of pyjamas will definitely help sweet dreams, too. Blast off into outer space with our jersey PJs (they even glow in the dark!) or get rest that’s good enough to eat with our fruit print pyjamas. Our pyjamas are made from soft cotton that won’t irritate the skin, and they’re easy to slip off in case of a last-minute toilet run!

It's time to layer up

You’re all freshly washed and squeaky clean. You’ve put on a pair of PJs. Now, it’s time to burrow under a blanket. Whether it’s a cold evening or there’s balmy summer skies ahead, it’s always a good idea to have a blanket by your side. And as our blankets are made from supersoft material, they’ll never irritate a child’s skin as they get into a comfy sleeping position.

Our blankets come in dozens of designs to suit all children (and their bedrooms, too). Whether it’s a stretchy striped blanket or a petite snuggle blanket with a friendly face on the top, it’s now oh-so-easy to sleep. We think everyone deserves to grow old with a bedtime blankie. After all, a JoJo blanket is for life, not just for Christmas.

If you want a snuggly night’s sleep, then zip up or pop up JoJo sleeping bags in a child’s bedtime routine. With lots of sleeping bags in varying tog ratings (up to 3.5 tog), you can find the right thickness to suit your child in all four seasons. Pick a reading book

It’s time to look in (or listen to) a book. Don’t believe us? In a National Literacy Trust study, 95.6% of children enjoy hearing stories read aloud to them. That’s a lot of nursery rhymes and fairytales being told every night. Reading books to little listeners will also get their imaginations whirring. There’s lots to explore, so delve into the deep, dark wood with The Gruffalo’s Child, or teach good values in a jolly Jellycat story. Building a bedtime story into a nighttime routine will help kids to wind down peacefully. Plus, it’s an easy way to bond with your child and share all those generations-old tales — just like The Very Hungry Caterpillar. If there’s little space for a bedroom bookshelf, why not invest in a Toniebox? Play hundreds of stories and bring big books to life. Check out our Tonies guide for more information.

Time to Sleep!

You’ve shut the book. You’ve said “night night” lots and lots. So now, it’s time to switch out the lights and get to sleep. Don’t worry about sleeping in the dark. Plug in a nightlight to banish all the boo-ing baddies far far away. The Shnuggle Moonlight even comes with Parent and Child modes to regulate room temperatures and promote healthy sleep patterns. Take any stress out of sleeping with a room projector. You’ll be humming “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” and getting some well-earned zzz’s in seconds.
