Sleep expert Jenna Wilson’s top tips for establishing a good routine are:

1. Check the basics before bed! Ensure your little one has had a drink, snack…and filled their attention cup, before you even think of starting their bedtime!

2. Ensure the routine is consistent. Children thrive on consistency (even if they don’t realise it), so ensuring your bedtime routine has the same steps every night will mean that their body and brain start to associate things like baths, stories and brushing teeth with bedtime.

3. Don’t allow your bedtime routine to be too long. Ideally, a bedtime routine will be no longer than 20-30 minutes to ensure your little one doesn’t get their second wind and become overtired!

You might even use your storybook time to teach them about nursery and it can be addressed in a positive way, such as “new things to discover at nursery”. Snuggly sleep essentials like a favourite soft toy, soft blankets and their cosiest pair of pyjamas will work wonders in helping them feel secure and will also help them build a sense of ownership around their sleep routine.

Ease the butterflies

Nursery is a big step for little ones, so it helps to find ways of softening any little worries they might be feeling. If possible, try and visit the nursery beforehand - some nurseries provide settling-in days or “stay and plays.” Let them meet friendly team faces, explore where they’ll play and rest, and it will feel a lot less scary when it comes to their official day one.

Remember, there are lots of other ways to practice separation, too. Try short playdates and day visits with a grandparent or other family members - or even just brief solo play in another room! This will help rebuild their confidence in being apart from you and ease them back into a routine.

And for those hours in the day when they just need a snuggle, a small cuddly companion or something familiar from home can offer reassurance. Packing soft toys or a blanket from home will help them feel comforted before they begin to explore the nursery’s toys, and they’ll make the perfect soothing naptime buddy, too.
