A Guide to Rockpooling with Kids

There's something so enchanting about rockpools. One minute it's just a puddle, the next it's a mini underwater world waiting to be discovered. Rockpooling is one of those brilliant family activities that costs very little but creates memories long after the sandy ride home in the car. So, before you head off with your bucket and net, here's everything you need to know on how to make rockpooling safe, fun and memorable for kids.

Before you go: Safety checklist

Check the tide times - Rockpooling is safest at low tide. Aim to arrive just before it's gone out and keep an eye on how quickly it comes back in.
Wear the right footwear - Algae-covered rocks and seaweed can be slippery, so a sturdy pair of water shoes or wellies can protect little feet from sharp barnacles and provide stability when climbing over rocks.
Dress for changing weather - British weather is unpredictable, especially at the seaside. Pack a few lightweight layers and a trusty packaway waterproof.
Stay sun safe - You can easily get carried away trying to spot the wildlife, so make sure they're topped up with sunscreen and dress them in UV-protective swimwear for extra coverage while they're wading in the water.
Keep children within arm's reach - Safety first! The ground will be uneven and incoming tides mean little adventurers should always stay close.

Rockpools are a great opportunity to teach children that being curious also means being kind to nature. They're home to all sorts of fascinating creatures, so it's important to explore very carefully, leaving everything just as you found it.

Make sure they look first and handle small sea creatures as little as possible by gently scooping them into a bucket or container for closer observation before putting them back into the pool they were found in. Leave behind any shells, seaweed and rocks as many creatures use them as homes! Lift rocks carefully, do not throw them and avoid chasing or disturbing any animals.
